Frequently asked questions

What are the CFSC and CRFSC courses?

The CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Course) is required for anyone wishing to obtain a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for non-restricted firearms, such as hunting rifles and shotguns.
The CRFSC (Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course) is required for those who also want to own restricted firearms, such as handguns.

Do I need to take both courses?

If you only want to apply for a PAL for non-restricted firearms, you only need the CFSC.
If you want to own restricted firearms as well, you must complete both CFSC and CRFSC.

Who is eligible to take the CFSC and CRFSC course?

Anyone 12 years or older can take the CFSC (but only those 18+ can apply for a PAL).
The CRFSC is generally taken by individuals 18 years or older, since restricted firearms require you to be of legal age to apply for the licence.

What does the course include?

Both CFSC and CRFSC include:

  • Classroom instruction (safe handling, storage, transport, and use of firearms)

  • Hands-on practical sessions

  • A written exam (multiple-choice)

  • A practical exam (handling firearms safely)

How long are the courses?

The CFSC usually takes 8–10 hours (1 full day).
The CRFSC typically takes an additional 6–8 hours (about half a day to a full day).

What is the passing grade?

You must score at least 80% on both the written and practical exams to pass.

What happens if I fail the test?

You may be allowed to retake the test at a later date.

Will I receive my firearms licence after completing the course?

No. After passing the course, you will receive a course report form. You must then apply to the RCMP for your PAL (or RPAL for restricted firearms) and go through background checks.

How long does it take to receive my licence?

Processing can take several weeks to a few months, depending on background checks and application volume.

Is the course offered in French and English in Quebec?

Yes, courses are generally available in both French and English. When registering, make sure to choose the course in your preferred language.

What should I bring to the course?

 Bring:

  • Government-issued photo ID (mandatory)

  • Pen

  • notebook (optional)

  • Lunch/snacks (for courses hosted by 613, no outside food is allowed in. Lunch/snacks are provided)

All course materials and training firearms are provided.

Do I need prior experience with firearms?

No. The courses are designed for beginners as well as those with experience.
